Our take
How to avoid a salt bridge
Here's what our customers ask most before buying, after years of selling these.
A salt bridge is a hard crust of salt that forms over the water in the tank. The salt above it never dissolves, so the softener runs on empty while the tank looks full. It's the most common reason people say their soft water "stopped working."
To avoid it: keep the tank a third to half full, not packed to the top; use pellets in humid garages; and push a broom handle down every few months to check for a crust. Florida humidity makes bridging more common, which is one more reason delivery on a schedule beats overfilling.

Questions people ask
What salt is best for a water softener?
Pellets for most systems. Avoid rock salt.
How much salt does a softener use?
About one 40-lb bag a month for a typical family.
How full should the salt tank be?
A third to half full.
Can I use potassium instead of salt?
Yes, for homes avoiding sodium. It costs more and you may need more of it.
Will water softener salt melt ice?
It can, but it's pricier than ice melt and can harm plants and concrete like rock salt.
