Well water is fixable. It starts with knowing what's in it.
What well water problems look like
Orange stains. Iron in your water.
Black stains. Usually manganese.
Rotten-egg smell. Hydrogen sulfide gas.
Cloudy water. Sediment from the well.

- About 43 million people in the US get water from private wells, and nobody tests a private well but its owner.
- Once a year: how often the CDC recommends testing a private well.
- About 15 grains: estimated hardness in well areas around Fort Myers, very hard.

Detergent: WQRF laundry and dishwasher studies (about 30% less at 10 gpg, nearly 70% less at 25 gpg). Fixtures: Battelle (low-flow shower heads clogged in about 18 months on hard water). Our take
The well test numbers we look at first
We build our systems with our own manufacturers, some with our own patents, and we've supplied softeners to other water companies for years. Here's what that's taught us.
Every well is different, so we never build a well system without a test. Here's what we're looking for, and what each number changes:
Hardness: sizes the softener. Iron: decides if you need an iron filter, and how big. Even small amounts can ruin a softener. Manganese: causes black stains; often treated with the iron. pH: many iron filters only work in the right pH range, and low pH can corrode pipes. Hydrogen sulfide: the rotten-egg smell; decides the sulfur treatment. Total dissolved solids: tells us how much the RO has to handle. Bacteria and nitrates: decide if you need UV, or a well disinfection first.
We also check your well pump's flow rate. Filters that clean themselves need enough flow to backwash. Too little flow and they clog up slowly, even if they're the right filters.
That's why our well system price says "from $3,750." Most wells fit the standard setup. If yours needs more, you'll know exactly why, with the numbers to back it up, before you book.

Questions people ask
Do I need to test my well water?
Yes. If it's your own well or a small shared well, nobody tests it but you. The CDC recommends testing a private well at least once a year. Larger community wells are tested by their operator, but iron, sulfur and hardness can still come through to your tap. Our free well water test kit is the easy way to start.
What does the free well water test check?
[Confirm the lab's list: hardness, iron, TDS, pH, and more.] If anything needs a closer look, one of our experts follows up.
Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?
That's usually hydrogen sulfide, a gas common in wells. If it only smells from the hot water, the water heater can be the cause. Either way, a test tells you which, and the Well Water System is built to remove it.
What causes orange or black stains?
Orange or rust stains mean iron. Black or dark brown usually means manganese. Both stain fixtures and laundry and wear out a regular softener fast.
Can a water softener remove iron from well water?
Small amounts, yes. Anything more needs a dedicated iron filter in front of the softener, which is exactly how our Well Water System is set up.
Is well water harder than city water?
Often, yes. Well water picks up minerals as it moves through rock underground, so hardness in wells tends to run high.
Does the well water system kill bacteria?
Not by default. If your test shows bacteria, we add UV treatment, which is part of our Ultimate system, and quote it before you book.
What does "from $3,750" include?
Standard installation of the iron and sulfur filter tank, the softener, and reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink. If your test shows something extra, like bacteria or very high iron, we quote the add-on before you book.
Will it lower the water pressure from my well pump?
It's sized to your pump's flow rate, so you shouldn't notice a difference.
How much maintenance does it need?
The filter tank cleans itself automatically. You add salt to the softener and swap the RO filters about twice a year; with the filter subscription, they show up on their own.
