That's Tampa water. And it's an easy fix.

What hard water looks like

  • Crusty shower head. White buildup clogs the spray.

  • Faucet scale. Comes right back after you scrub.

  • Cloudy glasses. Even right out of the dishwasher.

  • Hard water stains on glass. That foggy film that won't wipe off.

  • Dry, itchy skin. Soap film stays on your skin.

  • Dull, stiff hair. Conditioner can't fix it.

  • Scratchy laundry. Towels come out stiff and dull.

  • Scale inside your appliances. The damage you don't see.

Why Tampa water tastes earthy every spring

If your tap water in South Tampa or Seminole Heights suddenly tastes like dirt in the spring, you're not imagining it. Most of Tampa's water comes from the Hillsborough River reservoir behind the dam in Sulphur Springs. When the dry season drags on and the water warms up, algae blooms in the reservoir. The algae release two compounds, geosmin and MIB, that give water an earthy, musty taste and smell.

The city has said this happens almost every year when there's no flow over the dam and temperatures climb. During one bloom, neighbors in South Tampa, Seminole Heights, Tampa Heights and Riverside Heights posted in community Facebook groups that their water smelled "like fertilizer," and some thought their Brita filters had gone bad. The city confirmed an unusually high number of taste and odor calls and treated the reservoir. (ABC Action News)

The good news: the city says the water stays safe to drink during a bloom, and geosmin isn't harmful. It just tastes bad. The fix at home is activated carbon filtration, which pulls out the earthy taste along with the chloramine. That's the carbon stage in our City Water System, so the spring taste never reaches your glass or your shower.

Hard water, chloramine and the water Tampa buys in dry years

Tampa's own water reports put its hardness at about 8 to 11 grains per gallon, depending on the year. That's hard enough to leave white scale on faucets, spots on glasses and buildup inside water heaters. The city disinfects with chloramine, a mix of chlorine and ammonia that lasts longer in the pipes but is harder to filter out than plain chlorine.

Tampa's dry season runs roughly October through May. In dry years, the reservoir drops and the city buys extra water from Tampa Bay Water, the regional supplier. That water can be a blend of groundwater, river water and desalinated seawater, so the taste and hardness can change from month to month. Homeowners who just moved here often notice it first, and many assume something is wrong with their plumbing. In 2023 the city warned that some customers, especially in New Tampa, might notice the difference. (City of Tampa)

That's why a one-size-fits-all softener isn't the answer here. Your water can shift with the seasons, so we size your system to Tampa's hardest months, not its easiest, and pair it with carbon for the chloramine. How much does a water softener cost in Tampa?

Our City Water System is $2,950 installed in Tampa, with softener, filtration and drinking water.

Do I need a permit for a water softener in Tampa?

Florida doesn't require a contractor license for water softener installs. [Confirm local permit rules.] Our plumber handles it either way.
