Our take

What a lab test tells you that test strips can't

The question we get asked most about this, after [thousands] of installs:

Test strips from the hardware store are a good start. They give you a rough number for hardness, chlorine and pH. But they're color charts, so they're approximate, and they don't test for most things.

A lab test gives you exact numbers, and it checks things strips can't, like iron, manganese and total dissolved solids. [Confirm full list.] That's the difference between "your water is kind of hard" and "your water is 12 grains, with 0.8 ppm of iron," which is what we need to pick the right system.

Tips for an accurate sample: Use the kitchen cold tap, not a tap that runs through a filter or softener. Run the water for a couple of minutes first, unless your kit says otherwise. Fill to the line, cap it tight, and mail it back the same day.

Testing for lead is different. Lead tests usually need the first water out of the tap after it's sat overnight. Follow the instructions for whatever test you're doing.

Questions people ask

Is the water test really free?

Yes. The kit, the return postage and the lab test are all free.

Do I have to buy anything?

No. You get your results either way. If you want a fix, we'll give you a flat price.

How long do results take?

About a week from when you mail it back. [Confirm lab turnaround.]

How do I collect the sample?

Fill the bottle from your kitchen cold tap. Instructions are in the kit.

How do I test my water at home?

Test strips give you a quick hardness number. A lab test checks much more. Our kit gets you the lab test for free.

How do I test my water hardness?

A hardness test strip works for a rough number. Our free kit gives you the exact number from a lab.

How do I test well water?

Use a lab test, not just strips. The CDC recommends testing a private well at least once a year.

How do I test for lead in my water?

[If our lab tests lead: our kit covers it.] If not, use a state-certified lab. Lead usually comes from old pipes, not the city supply.

Isn't city water already tested?

Yes. Cities test and publish reports, and that's what your instant ZIP report uses. Your home's pipes can still add things after the water leaves the plant.
