How to read your city's water report

The question we get asked most about this, after [thousands] of installs:

Every water utility publishes a yearly report, called a Consumer Confidence Report. They're long and full of abbreviations. Here's what to look for:

Hardness, often in mg/L or ppm (divide by 17.1 for grains). Disinfectant: chlorine or chloramine. MCL, the legal limit, next to the level detected. And new PFAS results, which utilities are reporting more of now.

Remember: the report shows water at the plant and in the system. Your own pipes can still add things like lead in older homes. That's what a home test catches.
