Hard water, by the numbers
- About 156 pounds of rock a year: what a family of 4 runs through its pipes at 10 grains of hardness. About 250 pounds in very hard water.
- Up to 48% less efficient: gas water heaters on hard water in testing.
- 1 in 3 homeowners replaced appliances or fixtures because of buildup.

Our take
Your yearly softener checklist
After 20+ years and [thousands] of systems sold, these are the problems we see most.
Most softeners need very little, but a little matters. Monthly: check the salt level and keep it a third to half full. Every few months: push a broom handle down to check for a salt bridge.
Yearly: clean the brine tank if there's sludge at the bottom, test your water hardness, and make sure the clock is right after any power outage. On chlorinated city water, resin wears faster, so replace your carbon pre-filter on schedule to protect it.
Skip those, and the first sign is usually spots coming back. Do them, and a softener can easily pass 10 to 15 years.
