Sources: Water heater efficiency: WQRF and Battelle (gas tank heaters lost up to 48% efficiency on hard water; the calculator uses a conservative middle value). Detergent: WQRF laundry and dishwasher studies (about 30% less at 10 gpg, nearly 70% less at 25 gpg). Fixtures: Battelle (low-flow shower heads clogged in about 18 months on hard water). Appliance figures are our own conservative estimate until customer data replaces them.

Our take

Who actually needs all 8 stages

After [thousands] of softeners sold and 20+ years wholesaling water equipment to other companies, here's what we've learned.

We'll be straight: most homes don't need the Ultimate. The City Water System handles hardness, chlorine and drinking water for most city homes.

The Ultimate makes sense if:

You're on a well with any sign of bacteria, where UV is the safety net. Someone in your home has a weakened immune system, and you want every layer of protection [check with their doctor]. You're worried about specific contaminants like PFAS, and want certified RO plus whole-house carbon. You want to never buy bottled water again, and you want the best taste possible.

A few things to know before you buy: the UV bulb needs replacing about once a year, and its glass sleeve needs a quick clean so the light gets through. The permeate pump makes the RO more efficient, so it wastes less water. And the more stages, the more filters to change, which is why the Ultimate refill kit bundles them all into one delivery.

If you're not sure, call us. We'd rather sell you the right system than the biggest one.

Questions people ask

Do I need all 8 stages?

Most homes don't, and we'll tell you if you don't. The Ultimate is for people who want every protection in one system, or who have specific concerns like bacteria or PFAS.

What does UV do?

UV light treats bacteria and viruses that filters can miss. It matters most for well water or areas with boil-water notices.

What's a permeate pump?

A small pump that makes reverse osmosis run more efficiently, cutting the water sent down the drain by up to about 80% on tank-based systems.

Salt-based or salt-free Ultimate?

Salt-based removes hardness completely. Salt-free prevents scale without salt, for areas that restrict salt systems or homes that prefer no salt.

Does the Ultimate remove PFAS?

Certified RO membranes reduce PFOA and PFOS. We only claim what the parts are certified for [list certifications].

How often do the filters change?

Pre-filters and remineralization about every 6 to 12 months, the UV bulb yearly, the RO membrane every 2 to 3 years. The Ultimate refill kit covers it all.

How long does installation take?

A bit longer than our other systems since there are more stages, usually still one visit.

What if I don't notice a difference?

30-day money-back guarantee on the system.
