An estimate, not a guarantee. Your numbers depend on your water, your home and your habits. Enter your ZIP code to use your local hardness; until then it assumes 10 grains.
Sources: Water heater efficiency: WQRF and Battelle (gas tank heaters lost up to 48% efficiency on hard water; the calculator uses a conservative middle value). Detergent: WQRF laundry and dishwasher studies (about 30% less at 10 gpg, nearly 70% less at 25 gpg). Fixtures: Battelle (low-flow shower heads clogged in about 18 months on hard water). Appliance figures are our own conservative estimate until customer data replaces them.

Our take
When a combo system makes sense, and when it doesn't
After [thousands] of softeners sold and 20+ years wholesaling water equipment to other companies, here's what we've learned.
A combo system puts softening and carbon filtering in one tank. It's compact and costs less than two separate tanks. For a lot of homes, that's the right call.
A combo is a great fit when: Your water is moderately hard. Your city uses chlorine, not chloramine. Space is tight, like a condo or a small utility closet.
Go with two tanks when: Your city uses chloramine, which takes more carbon and longer contact time to remove. You have a bigger household using a lot of water. You want each part to last as long as possible, since separate tanks each clean themselves properly and can be replaced separately.
Not sure what your city uses? Your free water report tells you, and so does the city water section on each of our location pages.

Questions people ask
What's the difference between a water softener and a carbon filter?
A softener removes the hardness minerals that cause scale and dry skin. A carbon filter removes chlorine, the taste and smell that come with it, and some chemicals. This system does both, so every tap gets soft, filtered water.
Does it remove chloramine?
Chloramine is harder to filter than chlorine. Catalytic carbon handles it best. [Confirm the carbon type in our combo.]
How long does the carbon last?
[Confirm with partner, typically several years.] Carbon in a backwashing tank lasts far longer than cartridge filters.
Do I still need reverse osmosis?
For drinking water, yes if you want the best. RO removes dissolved stuff carbon can't, like fluoride, lead and most total dissolved solids. Our City Water System includes both.
Is it one tank or two?
[Confirm.] Our Premium Dual-Tank System splits softening and carbon into two dedicated tanks for longer media life.
Will it get rid of the chlorine smell in my shower?
Yes. Because it treats the whole house, the chlorine smell and taste are gone at every tap and shower.
How much maintenance does it need?
Add salt for the softener. The carbon cleans itself and only needs replacing every few years.
