Hard water, by the numbers
- About 156 pounds of rock a year: what a family of 4 runs through its pipes at 10 grains of hardness. About 250 pounds in very hard water.
- Up to 48% less efficient: gas water heaters on hard water in testing.
- 1 in 3 homeowners replaced appliances or fixtures because of buildup.

Our take
Repair or replace: the honest math
After 20+ years and [thousands] of systems sold, these are the problems we see most.
Our rule of thumb: if the softener is over 10 years old and the repair is more than half the cost of a new one, replace it. Older softeners also tend to use more salt and water than today's metered valves.
Replacing is also a chance to fix what the old one got wrong: the wrong size, no carbon in front on chlorinated water, or no drinking water filtration. And because we haul the old one away in the same visit, there's no gap in soft water.
