Here's the safe way to do it.

Steps

  1. Turn off the main water or the filter's bypass
  2. Release pressure at a nearby faucet
  3. Unscrew the housing and swap the cartridge
  4. Check the O-ring
  5. Turn water back on slowly and check for leaks

Our take

When to call a plumber instead

We've answered this question thousands of times, on calls, on installs and for the water companies we supply.

Cartridge filters are DIY-friendly. Backwashing tank systems are different: their media lasts years, and replacing it means draining the tank and handling heavy media. That's a plumber job.

Also call if the housing is stuck, cracked, or leaks after you tighten it. [Add model notes and video.]
