- You're in a condo with a tiny utility closet
Small home, right-sized softener.
Hard water, by the numbers
- About 156 pounds of rock a year: what a family of 4 runs through its pipes at 10 grains of hardness. About 250 pounds in very hard water.
- Up to 48% less efficient: gas water heaters on hard water in testing.
- 1 in 3 homeowners replaced appliances or fixtures because of buildup.

Is this your size?

Sources: Water heater efficiency: WQRF and Battelle (gas tank heaters lost up to 48% efficiency on hard water; the calculator uses a conservative middle value). Detergent: WQRF laundry and dishwasher studies (about 30% less at 10 gpg, nearly 70% less at 25 gpg). Fixtures: Battelle (low-flow shower heads clogged in about 18 months on hard water). Appliance figures are our own conservative estimate until customer data replaces them.

Our take
Small home, small softener? Usually, with one catch
After [thousands] of softeners sold and 20+ years wholesaling water equipment to other companies, here's what we've learned.
For 1 to 2 people, a 24,000 grain softener is usually right. The catch is very hard water. If you're at 15 grains or more, a small softener recharges every couple of days, which uses more salt and water and wears the parts faster. In that case, stepping up to 32,000 often saves money over time.
Condos and townhomes have their own issue: where does it go? A softener needs to sit where the main water line comes in, with a drain and an outlet nearby. Many Florida homes have the water line coming in outside, and some newer homes are built with a softener loop, pre-plumbed connections in the garage. Our plumber checks your setup on the call, so there are no surprises on install day.
If you're renting, ask your landlord first, or start with a shower softener you can take with you.

Questions people ask
Is a 24,000 grain softener big enough for two people?
On moderately hard water, yes. If your water is very hard (15+ grains), step up to 32,000 so it isn't regenerating every couple of days.
Will a water softener fit in my condo?
Most 24,000 grain units fit in a utility closet or a garage corner. We confirm the space on your call. Renters need the landlord's OK.
How often will it regenerate?
For 1 to 2 people, usually about once a week. It only regenerates when it needs to.
How much salt does a small softener use?
Less than a bigger unit, about [half a 40-pound bag a month] on average water.
Can I upgrade later if my household grows?
Yes, but it costs less to size right the first time. Tell us on the call if you're expecting more people.
Is it part of a complete system?
Yes. For small homes it can be the softener in our City Water System, with filtration and reverse osmosis included. [Confirm.]
